Read answerHow do I terminate the contract?
Either party may terminate the contract by giving not less than one month's written notice or paying one month's wages in lieu of notice (Standard Employment Contract clause 10). Reasons should be documented (e.g. mutual agreement, contract finished, employer relocation). The employer must notify the Immigration Department in writing within 7 days of termination using the online "Notification of Premature Termination of Employment Contracts" service on GovHK. After premature termination, the helper has 14 days to find a new employer or leave Hong Kong (the "two-week rule").
Read answerMy helper is pregnant — what should I do?
Pregnancy is NOT grounds for termination — under the Employment Ordinance, dismissing a helper because of pregnancy is unlawful and can carry significant penalties. Once a helper has been employed continuously for at least 40 weeks, she is entitled to 14 weeks of paid maternity leave (increased from 10 weeks in December 2020). The pay is 4/5 of her average daily wages; weeks 11–14 are subject to a maximum cap of HKD 80,000, and employers can apply to the Government for reimbursement of those four weeks under the Reimbursement of Maternity Leave Pay Scheme. Discuss continuation, hand-over, and replacement coverage as early as possible. Consult the Labour Department for the latest entitlements.
Read answerHow do I hire through HelperDoc?
Browse approved helper profiles → save your shortlist → message helpers directly → confirm a hire when both sides agree. We then prepare the Standard Employment Contract (ID 407) — the only contract accepted by the Immigration Department — and walk you through the visa paperwork, employer's compulsory insurance, and arrival logistics. Most placements complete in 4–8 weeks: about 6 weeks for new overseas hires (the Immigration Department processes 90% of applications within 6 weeks), and 2–3 weeks for finishing-contract or transfer helpers already in Hong Kong.
Read answerWhat are my basic rights as a helper?
